Provincial and territorial health plans

What your provincial or territorial plan covers, how to contact it, and where private insurance fills the gaps.

How coverage works

Understanding Canada’s health plans.

Each of the 13 provinces and territories runs its own plan under the Canada Health Act, sometimes called a government health insurance plan (GHIP). The plans cover essential care, but what they pay for dental, vision and prescriptions varies, and many Canadians add private coverage.

Three layers of coverage. Your provincial or territorial plan covers hospital and doctor care; workplace benefits add prescriptions, dental and vision where offered; personal health and dental insurance fills the same gaps if you have no workplace coverage.

Filling the gaps

Beyond your provincial plan.

  • Workplace benefits

Many Canadians receive additional coverage through workplace benefits, which can extend to spouses and dependants. The extent of coverage varies by employer, but it typically includes health, dental and vision care.

  • Personal insurance

For those without workplace benefits, personal health and dental insurance can help bridge the gap. Individual plans cover services not included in provincial plans, such as prescription drugs and specialized care, and some offer guaranteed coverage, even with pre-existing conditions.
