Coverage by category

HospitalCoveredStandard ward room

Yukon residents are covered for standard hospital accommodations, including ward rooms and medically necessary treatments. Private rooms may be available, but an additional fee will apply. Residents can inquire with Yukon Health and Social Services for more information.

Prescription drugsLimitedSeniors and some medical needs

Through Pharmacare, residents aged 65 and older (or 60 to 64 and married to a resident aged 65 or older) are covered for prescription drugs, and the Chronic Disease and Disability Benefits program covers eligible residents under 65. Copayment requirements and coverage limits may apply depending on the individual’s health status and income. The list of covered drugs is regularly updated to reflect the medical needs of the population.

VisionLimitedSeniors through Pharmacare

Yukon residents do not typically receive coverage for routine eye exams, glasses, or contact lenses under the territorial health plan. Seniors are covered for eye care through Pharmacare; other residents may need private insurance or special assistance programs.

DentalLimitedSeniors and lower incomes

The Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan does not provide routine dental coverage, though specific in-hospital dental surgeries may be covered in certain cases. The Yukon Dental Program covers dental care for residents enrolled in the plan who have no other dental coverage and meet its income limits, and Pharmacare covers dental care for seniors.

The federal Canadian Dental Care Plan (opens the Government of Canada website) also helps pay for dental care for residents who don’t have dental insurance and whose family income is below a set limit.

ParamedicalNot covered

Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan does not typically cover paramedical services like chiropractic care, acupuncture, or massage therapy. Residents may need to rely on private insurance or out-of-pocket payments for these services.

Hearing aids and medical suppliesLimitedSupplies based on need; no hearing aids

The Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan does not typically cover hearing aids; residents must explore private insurance or other assistance programs to help with the cost of hearing devices. The plan covers essential medical supplies based on assessed medical need. Eligible residents may receive help with the cost of devices and supplies that support their health and daily living, and the types of supplies covered vary with the individual’s medical condition and requirements.

AmbulanceLimitedMostly transfers between facilities

In Yukon, ambulance services may be partially covered depending on the medical necessity and the resident's eligibility for certain government programs. Ground and air ambulance services may involve fees, with coverage typically limited to inter-facility transfers. More information on ambulance service costs and coverage can be obtained from Yukon Health and Social Services.

Nursing and home careLimitedBased on an assessment

The Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan offers home care services to eligible residents based on assessed needs. Services include nursing, personal care, and rehabilitation support, allowing individuals to receive care in their homes or community environments when necessary.

Out of countryLimitedEmergencies, up to territorial rates

The Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan provides limited coverage for emergency medical services received outside of Canada. Coverage is based on territorial rates for hospital and physician services, with residents responsible for any costs beyond these amounts. Private health facility services and non-emergency care are not covered.

Accidental death and dismembermentNot covered

The Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan does not cover accidental death and dismemberment. Residents are encouraged to obtain private insurance if they require this type of coverage.

Beyond your provincial plan

Where private coverage fills the gaps.

Three layers of coverage. Your provincial or territorial plan covers hospital and doctor care; workplace benefits add prescriptions, dental and vision where offered; personal health and dental insurance fills the same gaps if you have no workplace coverage.

A general guide. What each plan covers varies by province or territory.

  • Bridge the gaps in coverage

Provincial health plans often leave gaps, such as prescription drugs, dental visits and vision care. Personal health insurance can cover expenses your government plan doesn’t, so you’re not left with unexpected out-of-pocket costs.

  • Plan for the long term

Personal health insurance can help you avoid paying high costs for treatment or services later. Taking a proactive approach helps you get the care you need now, and avoid bigger bills later on.
