The story

Corwin is an 80-year-old Canadian snowbird who resides in Arizona for the winter months. Shortly after settling in, he began experiencing sharp, dagger-like abdominal pains. Initially dismissing it as a fleeting discomfort, he hoped it would resolve on its own. But as days turned into weeks and the pain escalated from occasional to constant, Corwin went to the doctor. At the hospital, he was diagnosed with gallstones, a condition exacerbated by his history of similar health challenges.

His condition quickly deteriorated, leading to complications including atrial fibrillation and kidney failure, requiring dialysis. He was hospitalized for ten days; however, his health continued to falter, so he needed more complex and comprehensive care. His doctors decided it was best to transfer Corwin back by air evacuation to his home province, ensuring he received the specialized treatment he needed.

Because Corwin was aware of his prior encounters with gallstones just a month before his departure, he purchased Unstable Pre-Existing Medical Condition coverage; which is why his claim was covered. This saved him over $275,000 in medical expenses, and he made sure he got the care he needed while away.
